The Boy Who Lived

Around June, Courfeyrac always begins to feel little twinges of guilt. At the corner of his mind, names come poking, Enjolras, Prouvaire, Feuilly... He wonders what might have been, if-- and always stops at "if".

Then he seeks out Marie-Therese and Michel, and they bring his high spirits back with laughter and innocent smiles. He finds Catherine, and she unwittingly nurses his cheer to health.

And he thinks, the same every year, that this is best. There would never have been a Republique. His family loves him.

Everything reverts to normal.

And, regular like clockwork, next June it all happens again.
